Death & Grief Books for Kids

✨Death & Grief Books for Kids✨

As a mom of 3 (my kids are 8, 11 & 13), I'm always on the hunt for good reads that make death & grief accessible and easier to contemplate.

I don't have many recommendations for children in this Library, but here are some of the beloved books on our family shelf.

The Heart and the Bottle by Oliver Jeffers

Duck, Death and the Tulip by Wolf Erlbruch

Ida, Always by Caren Levis and Charles Santoso

Love is Forever by Casey Rislov

Gentle Willow: a Story for Children About Dying by Joyce C. Mils, Ph.D. & Cory Pillo

Cry, Heart, but Never Break by Glenn Ringtved & Charlotte Pardi

The Fall of Freddie the Leaf: a Story of Life for All Ages by Leo Buscaglia

The Day My Dad Turned Invisible by Sean R. Simmons

Where Do They Go? By Julia Alvarez & Sabra Field

Granddad’s Island by Benji Davies

One Wave at a Time: a Story About Grief and Healing by Holly Thompson & Ashley Crowley

When Grey Came To Stay by Amber Kuipers

These books are mostly for elementary age children, please DM if you need preschool recommendations (I have a handful). And stay tuned for an upcoming list of best grief & death books for tweens & teens.
